Then and Now

Village as it was c. 1955
The village in which I grew up was almost entirely self-contained. Everything lay within a short walk.
To venture forth elsewhere, there was a railway station. Sadly, the days had already gone when you could safely ride a bike.

Village as it is now
Most amenities have now disappeared, along with the railway line. Everything now lays a car-drive away. No-one rides a bike anymore, and it has become unpleasant, and even dangerous, to walk.
It has also become hideously ugly, noisy, and polluted.
The village I once knew is now no more than sprawl.
